WHAT JIU-JITSU REALLY MEANS

The Meaning of Jiu-JitsuThe Gentle Way

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the art of finding solutions under pressure.

It teaches you how to remain calm in stressful situations and solve problems using leverage, timing, and technique, instead of relying on brute strength, power, or resistance.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a smaller, weaker person can effectively defend themselves against a much larger and stronger opponent by understanding body mechanics, balance, and positioning.

More than a martial art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu develops:

  • Calmness in chaos

  • Clear thinking under pressure

  • Confidence without aggression

  • Control without force

It is not about overpowering an opponent.
It is about neutralizing conflict intelligently.

What you learn on the mat carries into life:
when pressure rises, you don’t panic — you adapt, breathe, and find a solution.

We are a non-competitive, family-friendly academy where kids, teens, and adults develop:

• Emotional strength
• Confidence
• Body awareness
• Grounding
• Real-life self-defense
• Calm communication skills
• Peaceful conflict resolution

This is the Gentle Art — the art of staying calm, centered, and capable in any situation.

Led by Professor Sergio Silva, a 5th-degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Black Belt in Judo, and former World Champion of Submission Wrestling, our academy embodies the authentic spirit and discipline of the world’s most effective martial art — Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Professor Silva began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1992 in Curitiba, Brazil, and started competing in 1994, earning victories in major tournaments across Brazil, Canada, and the United States. His journey in martial arts has been defined by passion, perseverance, and a relentless drive to share the art with others.

In the year 2000, Professor Silva moved to the Bay Area and began teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense as an assistant instructor at the Gracie Academy in San Francisco.

🗣 Verbal Jiu-Jitsu™ — Self-Defense Begins With Words
